Windows laptop repair

The same bench that fixes MacBooks fixes Windows laptops: screens, batteries, charging ports, keyboards, hinges and machines that run hot. Here is what to try first, and what each problem usually needs.

Problem → first check → usual fix

Six common laptop faults

Cracked or dead screen

Try firstPlug in an external monitor. A picture there means the laptop works and the panel or its cable is the fault.

Panel replacement for your exact model

Battery drains fast or will not charge

Try firstRun powercfg /batteryreport in Command Prompt: it compares design capacity with what the battery holds now.

Battery replacement

No power when plugged in

Try firstTry another outlet and, if you have one, another charger of the same wattage. Wiggle-sensitive charging points to the port.

Charger, DC jack or USB-C port

Keys missing, stuck or dead

Try firstTest with an external keyboard to rule out software.

Key or keyboard replacement

Loose or broken hinge

Try firstStop opening it one-handed from a corner — a cracked hinge mount gets worse quickly.

Hinge and mount repair

Hot, loud or shutting down

Try firstCheck that the vents are clear and that it is not working on a bed or sofa.

Find your BitLocker recovery key

Many Windows 11 laptops encrypt their drive automatically with BitLocker or Device Encryption. After some repairs — a new motherboard, a firmware update, sometimes just a change the security chip notices — Windows asks for a 48-digit recovery key before it will start.

If the laptop is signed in with a Microsoft account, the key is usually saved there. Find it before you come in at aka.ms/myrecoverykey, signed in with the same account, and keep a copy somewhere other than the laptop.

Work and school laptops store the key with the organisation’s IT team instead. Without the key, an encrypted drive cannot be unlocked by anyone — including us.

Questions

Which laptop brands do you repair?

Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI and most other Windows laptops. Call with the exact model number (on a sticker underneath or in Settings → System → About) and we will check part availability.

How much does a laptop repair cost?

It depends on the model and the part, and part prices change often, so we quote by phone or at the counter. You hear the price before any work starts.

How long will it take?

Common screens and batteries can often be done quickly when the part is in stock. Less common models may need a part ordered — we will give you a realistic time on the phone.

Will you need my Windows password?

Ask at the counter what your repair needs. Many hardware repairs can be done and tested without it. If something has to be checked inside Windows, a temporary local account lets you keep your own account private.
