Questions
Where is the model number on a MacBook?
On the bottom case, in the small regulatory text near the hinge edge. It is the letter A followed by four digits, for example A2337 or A2681.
Is the model number the same as the serial number?
No. The model number (A followed by four digits) identifies the design and is shared by thousands of machines. The serial number is unique to your Mac and is used for warranty checks.
What if I cannot read the model number?
If the Mac turns on, choose Apple menu → About This Mac: it shows the model name and year, such as “MacBook Air (M2, 2022)”, which works just as well. If it does not turn on, the serial number on the bottom case can be checked on Apple’s coverage site to find the model.
Why does one model number cover two years?
Apple keeps the same model number when it updates the chip inside without changing the case design. A1466, for example, covers 13-inch MacBook Air models from 2012 to 2017. For screens and batteries, the model number is usually what decides which part fits.
